Contes des Mers du Sud by Robert Louis Stevenson consists of narrations of different genres that are all situated in the Pacific Ocean as seen in 19th century. By referring to a rich source of anthropological knowledge, Stevenson has asked himself a number of fundamental questions in regard to the Pacific Islands. The past of the islands is questioned by making use of a vast literary tradition. Mythology and Polynesian myths are also treated. He announces the decadence of imperialism and denounces any exclusion of the Other.
