Through his famous ocular harpsichord, Louis-Bertrand Castel (1688-1757) sought to reveal the rational order of nature (and the divine hand behind it) by pointing out correspondences between sounds and colors. In so doing, he unwittingly opened the door to libertine art, and to the respectability of entertainment.
