The idea that the 18th century remained a stranger to history is itself, as Ernst Cassirer observed, "an idea with no historical foundation." In fact, a preoccupation with history traverses Enlightenment thought as a whole, for it is perceived as a vector par excellence of the transformations in nature, society and individuals that philosophers set out to understand. The present collection of articles, written by specialists from different disciplines and national contexts (Canada, Finland, France, Great Britain, Holland, Japan, USA), studies the rich historical imagery of the Enlightenment as it relates to three major areas : Reinventing Antiquity, Imagining new worlds, and Thinking about revolution.
