Daniel Maximin is a poet, novelist and essayist who taught literature and served in the Culture and Education ministries. This novel revisits the whole history of his native Guadeloupe through the stories of five generations, and was hailed by Aimé Césaire as signaling the renewal of the Antillean novel.
