This study relates the poetics of the post-World War I roman-fleuve to its historical context through the examples of R. Rolland, R. Martin du Gard, J. Romains and G. Duhamel. It points out the unrelenting tensions pervading their novels – between construction and destruction, ruins and utopias, memory and loss.
