The figure of Hercules could not have fared well in Decadent Literature, which valued the anemic, the sterile and the sickly, and reveled in the subversion of myths. Indeed, it turned this emblem of strength and virility into a masochist, ripe for humiliation and execution at the hands of the fin-de-siècle heroine.
