This study focuses on Jean Charles Léonard Simonde de Sismondi, notably on his work as a biographer. It looks at his contributions to the Biographie universelle ancienne et moderne of the Michaud brothers. The author shows that Sismondi’s entries reveal the entire history of Italy, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the fall of Napoleon. Sismondi’s commentaries also give a personal insight into notions like sovereignty, liberty, nation, Decadence and Renaissance.
