With Faust, Goethe invented a new theodicy based on a novel diabolical character. This cross-media study of Mephistopheles’ metamorphoses through the works of Lenau, Delacroix and Berlioz (who did not share Goethe’s positive outlook on man and the world) traces the evolution of the Faustian myth in the 19th century.
