Synesthesia, as an aesthetic and philosophical principle, guided artistic creation during the English Renaissance, spurring transpositions between the arts and early attempts at a Gesamtkunstwerk. This essay analyses a number of synesthetic creations and aims to trace the origins and development of this aesthetic.
