This work recounts how Paul Claudel, then the French ambassador to Japan, paradoxically (and shrewdly) managed to take advantage of the 1923 earthquake that razed Tokyo and Yokohama to the ground to meet the ambitious political objectives assigned to him by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
