Chateaubriand’s relationship with painting has seldom been analyzed. This study looks at the various pictorial sources that make up the writer’s imaginary museum, shows how his metaphysical conceptions led to specific pictorial aesthetics, and provides a definition of Chateaubriand’s religious sublime.
