This study traces the origins of the scientific and technical police in Switzerland and France. It deals in particular with the foundation of the Institute of Scientific Police at the University of Lausanne which is among the world’s prominent forensic education facilities. It then focuses on its first director, Rodolphe Archibald Reiss, considered as one of the pioneers of criminalistics.
