Rainer Maria Rilke’s brief stay at the Étoy priory in 1921 was not as dull or solitary as was once believed. The poet was in fact busy reading some key authors (e.g. Valéry) and hosting a number of ladies, among which Countess Anna de Noailles – a veritable star of Parisian social life and a poet in her own right.
